Starting the New Year with a Fever

A Rough Ride into 2025

Hoppin’ John with Brazilian Dessert

2025 came rolling in like a jalopy with a couple of missing tires. New Year’s Eve, I made a traditional southern meal vegan-style: black-eyed peas, vegan mac-n-cheese, greens, and then bringing some Brazil into the mix I made vegan passionfruit mousse. Most of the day was taken up by cooking.

Once I finished the mousse, I started feeling sick. Upstairs I took my temperature and it was 100.9 fahrenheit/ 38.27 celsius. Clearly I was down for the count. I let the family know and sunk into feverish dreams.

New Year’s day was a wash. I was really sick all day with a fever. The only thing appetizing was the mousse.

Slow Pace, Low Energy

The whole first week of the year was a slow roll, not much I could do. Breathing was hard and I was coughing a lot. The headache wouldn’t go away. It’s frustrating when you can’t go at your usual pace.

Most of January it’s been lingering with me. It wasn’t corona. The larger world and my personal world felt pretty bleak. My former father-in-law died, had some work drama, challenging kids, and also the swirl of madness blown in by a bad wind. After a whole month I’m finally starting to come back up to regularly scheduled programming.

There’s a lot to absorb and much to prepare for. If you like tequila and maple syrup, I’d recommend getting out there and stocking up right now before the tariffs kick in.

I’m ready for a vacation. Any suggestions?
